It is a black and white photo. A three-storey, elongated building can be seen. There are many high mullioned windows in the light-coloured façade. There are some trees in front of the building. A light-coloured fence appears to surround the building and the trees. On the other side of the fence and thus in the foreground of the picture are bushes and a kind of natural meadow.

SCHLESWIG-STADTFELD

There were two institutions in Schleswig: one for adults in Schleswig-Stadtfeld and one for children and young people in Schleswig-Hesterberg. In 1941, Stadtfeld became the location of a »Children’s ward« and, from February 1942, took in children and young people from the »Children’s ward« in Hesterberg. The medical director of the department, Erna Pauselius, accompanied them.

Carl Grabow was the medical director of the Schleswig-Stadtfeld Institution and nursing home. He remained in this position until 1951 and died in 1965. After Erna Pauselius left in April 1942, Johannes Krey took over the management of the »Children’s ward« on an interim basis until the end of 1942. In 1943, he handed it over to Hans Burkhardt, who remained there until 1969.

A total of at least 216 children and young people up to the age of 16 died in the Schleswig-Hesterberg and Schleswig-Stadtfeld »Children’s wards«.

All investigations against those involved in the murder were dropped. Johannes Krey set up his own practice in Neumünster.
