Carers

This is a yellowed sheet of paper. A list has been typed on it. The list is headed: »The following nurses were employed in the children's ward.« The document is dated 4 October 1947. The nurses' positions, names and places of residence are documented. The director of the home was Wilhelmine Wolf. Below her name are details of twelve other nurses. Seven nurses are listed as »nurses still employed at the institution.«

Overview of nursing staff in the ‘paediatric ward’ dated 4 October 1947.

NLA Hannover Nds. 721 Lüneburg Acc. 8/98 No. 3.

There were 22 carers working in the Lüneburg »Children’s special wards«. They were obliged to do so. Marie Jürgen resigned as head nurse after just ten days. Ingeborg Weber took her own life. Both are therefore missing from the list compiled after 1945, which was used for criminal investigations. Little is known about the carers. Some of them are presented here as examples.

MARIE-LUISE HEUSMANN (1913 – 1984)

Marie-Luise Heusmann came from Hanover. She attended a private school for daughters there for eight years. She then went to a home economics school for a year and worked as a housemaid. From 1931 to 1932, she trained as an infant carer. She became a student nurse in 1934 and graduated from the Langenhagen sanatorium and nursing home in 1936. When the institution was closed in 1938, she moved to the Lüneburg sanatorium and nursing home. From October 1943, she worked in the »Children’s special wards« in Lüneburg and became head of the department in October 1945. When questioned in 1947, she explained the increased infant mortality rate as a result of the children’s impairments. She ruled out homicide. She died in Lüneburg on 20 March 1984.
