This map of present-day Poland shows psychiatric institutions and hospitals whose patients were murdered. Tiegenhof, Loben, Konradstein and Meseritz-Obrawalde became killing centres.

MURDER OF POLISH PATIENTS

With the invasion of Poland by German troops, the mass murder of thousands of Polish patients from sanatoriums, nursing homes and Polish hospitals began. They were shot and killed with gas. Initially, it was mainly local patients who were murdered. Then sick people from the German Reich were also transferred to institutions in occupied Poland, where they were killed with medication and through lack of food. In total, more than 26,000 sick people were murdered in occupied Poland.

Many former Polish sanatoriums, nursing homes and hospitals continued to be used as SS barracks, as military hospitals for the wounded or as welfare homes for Germans. They also served as transit camps for mentally ill resettlers and/or became killing centres where sick people from the German Reich were murdered. A film shows the conversion of the Treskau-Owińsk sanatorium and nursing home after the patients were murdered.
