HAMBURG-LANGENHORN

The Hamburg-Langenhorn (Ochsenzoll) sanatorium and nursing home was established in 1892 as an agricultural branch of the Friedrichsberg mental hospital in Hamburg. Six years later, the facility became independent. From 1905 onwards, it was known as the Langenhorn mental hospital. During the Nazi era, the sanatorium became a collection point for over 4,000 patients, who were transferred from there to killing centers. From the spring of 1941, 476 adult patients were transferred to the Lüneburg Sanatorium. Many patients were also murdered in the Meseritz-Obrawalde killing center. From 1941, there was a »children’s ward« where at least 23 children and young people with disabilities were murdered. In front of House 25 (administration building) there is a memorial site commemorating the crimes committed against the patients at Langenhorn.
